The Class of 1986 from Sainik School, Kazhakootam, carried out the lighting of flame ceremony in memory of their departed classmates – Jawahar N Rao (1626) and Shyam R J (1654) – at Kochi on 29 December 2011.
Mathrubhumi Daily did an exhaustive coverage of the event at Karunagappally and the Sainik School campus on 10 December, 2011 featuring the Commemorative meeting in his hometown and the unveiling of his bust by a grateful and proud School Alumni.
The Flame of Remembrance event, lit for Capt Harshan at the Parachute Regiment Training Centre, RT Nagar, on Saturday, December 10, 2011 was also covered by the Bangalore edition of the Malayalam dailies with equal fervor, and mostly due to the concerted efforts of a spirited band of Kazhakians from the Bangalore SSKZM Alumni Chapter.
A ‘Flame of Remembrance’ for Capt R Harshan, who laid down his life fighting terrorists in Kashmir in March 2007, was lit at the Parachute Regiment Training Centre, RT Nagar, on Saturday. Harshan, who was only 27, was conferred the Ashok Chakra the same year, the youngest recipient of the peace-time gallantry award.
The first Flame of Remembrance, a Golden Jubilee project of the OBA was ignited by the batch of 1988. Old Students of the batch got together at Alappuzha on 16 July 2011 to light a torch to remember their departed batch mates, Flg. Offr. Nevil Benedict (Roll No. 1838), Mr. M Nagaraj (Roll No. 1851) and Mr. V Manoj Kumar (Roll No. 1881).
